Frumpy to Fabulous!

One thing that makes me sad is when teenagers or lost people associate modesty with frumpiness. My goal in starting this blog almost 3 years ago was to help ladies get out of their frumpy, modest clothes and into some modern, flattering, modest outfits!

I know as Moms we can put our looks on the back burner, but what we don't realize is that our lack of caring is a bad testimony to our teenagers, our church members, and lost people. If we want the next generation to appreciate modesty, we must make it look attractive to them. Of course, we are not going to compromise God's Word to do so, but we don't have to look like we just woke up either. It's all about balance!

So many ladies are hiding behind their baggy clothes, ponytails, and dark circles, and just honestly don't feel beautiful. I HATE to think that ladies don't think that they are beautiful. EVERY lady is beautiful, because first and foremost God made you perfectly! I want to help you get some of your confidence back. Not because we want to impress others, but because it's important to view yourself in a positive way. I want you to look in the mirror and be confident that you are beautiful.

I asked my good friend Melissa, to help me make the point that looking nice doesn't take THAT much more time, but it does, of course, take a little more effort.

Left: no makeup, hair in ponytail, old baggy tee shirt, jean skirt, and old flip flops. 3 mins to get ready.

Right: 7 minute makeup routine: little brow pencil, top eyeliner, 2 coats mascara on top, once coat mascara on bottom, foundation, and blush. Hair all natural with bangs pinned back with a pouf. Cute tank, cardigan, simple necklace, jean skirt, and cute flip flops. 10 mins to get ready.

Only a 7 minute difference in getting ready time between these two looks. It doesn't have to be an all glamorous affair to put in a little extra time for yourself. Just a little extra effort in your appearance will instantly boost your mood and confidence and help you feel ready to take on the day! We are worth the extra 7 mins!

Left: no makeup, second-day hair, old baggy tee shirt, jean skirt, and Old Navy flip-flops. 3 minutes to get ready.

Right:10-min. makeup routine: pressed powder foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, eyeshadow, brow liner, lip gloss, and mascara. Second-day hair sprayed with dry shampoo, and used a 3 barrel waver. (takes about 10 minutes) Cute graphic tee, jean skirt, and cute sandals.

I do take a little longer to get ready because I have a high-maitenance hair style, but if you have longer hair, you can find tons of cute ideas to wear your hair on Pinterest! I second Melissa's statement, you ladies are WORTH the extra time getting ready!

Here's some of my outfits from the last two weeks! We've been SUPER busy with school, soccer games, my Younique business, church, etc...so I forget to take pictures every day!

  1. Thank you for sharing this blog. I dress modestly and I stopped wearing skirts all the time because my husband thinks it's weird. So I've converted to wearing looser fitting capris and mixing skirts in during the week. He's ok with me wearing skirts just not everyday. Honestly, I feel more put together wearing a skirt. Your blog is very encouraging and I love the pics, so I can get outfit ideas.

  2. Thank you for the reminder to every woman to take the time to care what we look like. I am a stay at home mom & it is easy to fall into the rut of just putting on whatever each day, but I feel so much better about myself when I take the time to care about my appearance! We are to be examples to others!

  3. I am not someone who adheres to the same modesty standards as you do (I wear pants and shorts), but I still enjoy checking out your outfits for ideas, and I completely agree with the post of your point today. Even when you're comfortable, it is so worth it to take the extra few minutes to pull yourself together. You can be casual and put together with only a little extra effort. Good post!

    1. I deleted my other comment because it was too similar to what I had originally posted- connectivity blipped on me for a minute there.

  5. This is great i am 20 and a student but i do take the time to do my hair, makeup and put together an outfit when going out. I also have Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome so i have to take my time with the process of getting dressed and put together. As if i don't i just get to overwhelmed. I do wear pants but i wear loose fitting and i don't show cleavage and i use layers to help with sensory issues.
I love your blog and your outfits.

  9. This post is awesome, Lauren! I love how you did the before and after photos, and I love how you emphasize balance. It's OK for us Christian women to want to look pretty and put together, so long as we don't forsake God to do so (and make it a top priority in our lives). You've inspired me with this post!

  10. Totally agree that modest doesn't have to mean just throw on a t-shirt. You do a great job of showing how to be modest and still fabulous!

  11. I love your blog!! You always have great posts, but I have to say this one is my favorite. The message is so timely with school starting and mamas being pulled in all directions. It really doesn't take that much time to add some style. As you have shown, a little effort goes a long way! Thank you for the reminder and for the encouragement. You have blessed me today!

  12. I am a teenager and I love makeup! I take 10 minutes to do my makeup and I really don't mind. However, when it comes to my outfits, I would totally consider it frumpy. I am afraid of wearing bright colors, patterns, and necklaces, but I don't know why. Anyways, you have totally inspired me to make an effort and it really helps me if I plan all my outfits out for a week. I am slowly growing out this frumpy phase and it is kinda fun to mix colors and patterns and try on different styles etc!!!

  14. I was super busy yesterday at home, and I didn't take time with my appearance. My whole day just seemed off track! :) I have found that having cute, casual outfits for days I am not working really helps me feel more put together!
